This guide shows how to create a multilingual Video on-Demand (VoD) item which can be embedded into your site, allowing viewers to select their preferred language in the player. This is done by uploading a single language video item and adding MP3 file for the translated languages. After all files have been uploaded to Clevercast, you can generate a multilingual VoD item.
Note: to be able to use the features in this guide, you must have a Clevercast Multilingual plan with support for Video on-Demand.
A multilingual VoD item can also be used as the source for pseudo-live streaming. Viewers will not see a difference between such a pseudo-live stream and a real live stream. Since this is a multilingual video, they will be able to select their preferred language in the video player.
Uploading the video file and setting its language
Before you can generate a multilingual VoD item, you must create a single-language VoD item by uploading the original video (= containing a single video and audio stream). Go to the Upload -> Multi menu. If you want to use your multilingual item for pseudo-live streaming, make sure to select the ‘Pseudo-Live Uploads‘ workflow profile. Select your video file and upload it.
When the upload is completed, Clevercast will create a VoD item by transcoding the video and publishing the transcoded files on the CDN (this may take some time). The Media -> Items menu lets you monitor transcoding progress. When the item is ready, go to its detail page.
First you must set the default language of the video item. Select the ‘Audio Languages‘ panel and use the ‘Default Language‘ control to select the language spoken in the uploaded video. If the video contains multiple languages, you can select
Important: this must be done before you create the multilingual video item. When the multilingual video item has been created, you can no longer change the languages.
Uploading the MP3 files
After you have set the item’s default language, press ‘Actions’ -> ‘Create Multilingual Video’ in the menu on the left.
This will direct you to a page where you can upload the MP3 files for the audio translations. Important: all MP3 files must have the exact same duration as your video! Under the ‘Upload New‘ panel, select a language and an .mp3 file on your local machine and press Submit. Do this until you have uploaded all translations.
When all MP3 files have been uploaded press the ‘Create Multilingual Item‘ button in the ‘Uploaded MP3 Files’ panel: Clevercast will now start transcoding and publishing your multilingual item. The video will be transcoded for adaptive streaming and exported to our CDN (this may take some time).
Manage Video on-Demand items
Go back to the Media -> Items menu. You will now see a new multilingual item, with a button for language selection in the player. You can copy the embed code and paste it in your website.
The item’s settings allow you to select a different player or viewing profile. The menu’s on the left let you change the poster image, add chapters, add WebVTT captions to the video…
